Understanding the Child Care Subsidy (CCS) in 2026: What Every Family Needs to Know

Navigating childcare costs can feel overwhelming at first, but the good news is that support is available. The Australian Government’s Child Care Subsidy (CCS) is designed to make early learning more affordable, helping more families access quality childcare with confidence.

With some important updates introduced in 2026, it’s a great time to understand how CCS works and what it means for your family.

What is the Child Care Subsidy (CCS)?

The Child Care Subsidy is a government payment that helps reduce your out-of-pocket childcare costs.

Rather than being paid directly to you, the subsidy goes straight to your childcare provider, which means your daily fees are reduced upfront. You simply pay the “gap”, the remaining amount after the subsidy is applied.

What Changed in 2026? The 3-Day Guarantee

One of the biggest updates to CCS came into effect in January 2026.

All eligible families now receive at least 72 hours of subsidised childcare per fortnight. That’s roughly three days per week.

This is often referred to as the “3-Day Guarantee”, and it’s designed to make early learning more accessible for every child.

Even better:

  • You no longer need to meet strict activity requirements (like work or study) to access those first 72 hours
  • Families with higher activity levels (over 48 hours per fortnight) can still access up to 100 hours of subsidised care

This change gives families more flexibility and ensures children can benefit from consistent early education.

How Much CCS Can You Get?

Your subsidy amount isn’t the same for everyone, it’s tailored to your family’s situation.

Here’s what affects how much you receive:

1. Your Family Income

  • Families earning up to $85,279 can receive up to 90% subsidy
  • The percentage gradually reduces as income increases
  • Families earning $535,279 or more are not eligible

2. Hours of Care You’re Eligible For

  • Minimum: 72 hours per fortnight (3-Day Guarantee)
  • Up to 100 hours per fortnight, depending on your circumstances
Food and Nutrition Activity

3. Number of Children in Care

If you have more than one child aged under 5 in care, you may receive a higher subsidy for your younger children.

4. Type of Childcare Service

The subsidy is calculated using a government hourly rate cap (for example, around $14.63/hour for centre-based care), which helps determine how much is covered.

What Will You Actually Pay?

Your final cost depends on:

  • Your CCS percentage
  • Your childcare provider’s daily fees
  • How many days your child attends

Because the subsidy is applied directly, many families see a significant reduction in their weekly childcare costs, making early learning much more accessible.

Who is Eligible for CCS?

Most families will be eligible if they:

  • Care for a child under 13
  • Use an approved childcare provider
  • Meet residency requirements
  • Ensure their child’s immunisations are up to date

If you’re unsure, it’s always worth checking, many families are surprised by how much support they can receive.

How to Apply for CCS

Applying is straightforward and can be done online:

  1. Log in to your myGov account
  2. Link your Centrelink account
  3. Submit a Child Care Subsidy claim
  4. Confirm your child’s enrolment with your chosen childcare centre

It’s a good idea to apply early, as approvals can take a few weeks.
